Alpha Sleuth® Solving Tips & Tutorial

General Solving Tips

Keep these fundamentals in mind at all times:
  • Use the letter-set (A-Z) to track letter placements and number assignments.
  • The letter-set has 21 consonants & only 5 vowels, so use your vowels wisely.
  • Finding a good place for Q(u), J, Z, X, K, V and W often leads to success.
  • Look for unusual letter patterns (grid) and number combinations (phrase).
  • Solving the grid helps you solve the phrase, and vice versa.
  • Follow your strongest clues first.  Save educated guesses for last.
  • A number at an intersection cell often represents a vowel (A E I O U).
  • The letter A is often used in the phrase, so 1=A is true in many cases.
  • Our free Solving Tool has word- and pattern-search capability.

Solving Tutorial

(Example below copied from the Introduction.  View as PDF.)

As the name suggests, an Alpha Sleuth® requires diligent detective work to solve.  You will use deductive reasoning skills in various forms: word knowledge, pattern recognition, memory recall, process of elimination, combinative analysis, and even educated guesswork.  An Alpha Sleuth® is very much a challenge of logical deduction!

The solving process will vary from puzzle to puzzle, of course, but the Solving Tips (above) should be kept in mind at all times.  The analysis below shows one possible method for solving the Example.  There are surely better, and more efficient, ways which you'll soon discover on your own.

A quick glance at our Example puzzle reveals a promising lead:

We can surmise this must be LITTERBUG or JITTERBUG.  If we had to guess, the letter J is more likely because J is generally more difficult to place than L.  We'll save that choice for later.  Either way, we can be sure this word ends with G

Notice the last cell has the number 5.  That means 5=G, a very important clue!  Remember: the numbers are assigned in alphabetic sequence.  So if 5 represents G, then 1,2,3,4 must be less than G

Therefore 1,2,3,4 must represent A,C,D,E or F -- but not B since that's used in LITTERBUG or JITTERBUG.  Given 5=G, we deduce from the grid that 4=E since 4=F will not work.  Since B is already used, we know with certainty: 1=A, 2=C, and 3=D!

We can now see the word DISCO (down), making 8=S.  This find makes JITTERBUG (vs. LITTERBUG) very likely since, we recall, the grid words are related to the phrase.  Now we're getting somewhere!

Let's re-examine the phrase.  We'll use images from our free Solving Tool from here on for demonstration purposes:

It doesn't take long to see: SONG AND DANCE.  So that means 6=N and 7=O.  We now know all the number assignments.  More importantly, we know the complete phrase, which indicates the overall theme

From our Solving Tips (above), we can see how "Solving the grid helps solve the phrase, and vice versa."

We can now see the word DISCO (down), making 8=S.  This find makes JITTERBUG (vs. LITTERBUG) very likely since, we recall, the grid words are related to the phrase.  Now we're getting somewhere!

Let's see what the puzzle looks like now (remaining letters: F H I K L M P Q R U V W X Y Z):

We see immediately the word GROOVY (down), which is very thematic.  Note the Q and U have not been placed yet.  The Q must go in the upper-right corner.  Ahh, SEQUIN (down) makes sense!

Our remaining letters: F H K L M P W X Y Z

We need to find a good home for the Z.  Now we see WALTZ (down) and HOKYPOKY (across), both strong thematic words!  That leaves us with F M X.  Of course: FRANK (down) and REMIX (across).  All done!

The finished puzzle, when solved in our free Solving Tool, looks like this:

Of course, SEQUIN alludes to (eg.) "sequin dress".  And FRANK is a subtle reference to the name Frank, as in Frank Sinatra.  :-)
